How to Care for Synthetic Hair Extensions: The Complete Guide

Caring for premium synthetic fibre is pleasantly straightforward – but it works differently from human hair. Synthetic fibre doesn’t get greasy, stays true to colour and often holds heatless-styled waves for many weeks. In return, it reacts more sensitively to heat and friction. Follow a few simple rules and you’ll enjoy your extensions for a very long time – with even shine and a silky feel.

The 3 most important rules at a glance

  • Use heat mindfully. Synthetic fibre can’t handle the same temperatures as human hair. Use a blow dryer, flat iron or curling wand only on a low setting and only if the fibre is expressly labelled as heat-resistant.
  • Detangle gently. Always use a wide-tooth comb and always work from the ends upwards – never force your way through from the top.
  • Store it properly. Laid out flat or hanging, protected from dust and away from direct sunlight. This keeps the shape intact and stops the fibre from matting.

Washing: only as often as needed

Clip-in and halo extensions don’t come into direct contact with your scalp – so they get dirty far less often than your own hair. As a rule, washing them every 15 to 20 days of wear, or whenever there’s visible dirt or product build-up, is enough. Here’s how to do it:

  • Before washing, gently detangle with a wide-tooth comb.
  • Use lukewarm to cool water – never hot water, which damages the fibre and can drop the waves.
  • Add a small amount of mild, sulphate-free shampoo to the water or stroke it gently through the lengths. Don’t rub and don’t knead vigorously.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clear, cool water.
  • Optionally apply a light conditioner to the lengths and ends only (never on the wefts/the roots), leave it on briefly, then rinse out.
  • Gently press out the water – don’t wring and don’t rub. Lay the hair in a towel and pat it dry carefully.

Drying: air drying is best

Lay the extensions flat on a towel or hang them on a hanger and let them air dry. This is the gentlest method and preserves the built-in waves. Blow drying is only recommended on a cool or low setting and with plenty of distance – and only if the fibre is cleared for it. Never brush or comb the extensions while they’re soaking wet: wet fibre is at its most fragile.

Detangling without breakage

The most common care mistake is combing too roughly. Here’s how to keep everything smooth:

  • Always use a wide-tooth comb or a special extensions brush.
  • Hold the strand loosely in the middle and work upwards in small sections, starting from the ends.
  • If you hit a knot, don’t pull – carefully tease it apart instead.
  • Comb through gently once before sleeping and before storing – this prevents matting.

Heat & styling: the bonus of premium synthetic fibre

The loveliest advantage of synthetic fibre: it holds its shape. Waves you’ve set in often last for weeks – with no heat at all, no daily restyling (“wash and wear”). That’s exactly why you won’t need a flat iron or curling wand in most cases.

If you do want to work with heat, the rule is: only if the specific product is expressly labelled as heat-resistant, and then on the lowest setting. Standard synthetic fibre can melt or frizz at too high a temperature – and that can’t be undone. When in doubt, check the details on the product page or just ask us.

What you should avoid

  • Hot water when washing or rinsing.
  • High heat from a blow dryer, flat iron or curling wand without the fibre being expressly cleared for it.
  • Alcohol-based products (e.g. many hairsprays) – they dry the fibre out.
  • Heavy oils and serums at the roots/on the wefts – they weigh the hair down and can make it sticky.
  • Friction against rough scarves, wool or coarse polyester – this can rough up the fibre.
  • Going to sleep with wet extensions or storing them while wet.

How long do synthetic hair extensions last?

With the right care, high-quality synthetic extensions will be with you for many months. It’s time for a new set when the fibre stays permanently dull despite proper care, no longer detangles smoothly, or the wefts/clips lose their grip. Because our premium synthetic fibre is colour-consistent, you’ll get exactly the same shade again when you reorder – no re-dyeing, no colour matching needed.
